True Confessions from The Bold Life Blogger

Happy Woman

"Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.” Joseph Pulitzer

Last January, I told my friend Evita, my only goal for my second year of blogging was to write 100 guest posts. After listening quietly, she advised me to write only when I was in a good emotional place or what I call the write place.

Her wisdom resonated with me. Instead of focusing on how many articles I’d write, I decided to write from my heart, in a state of joy. I would write if only if I had something to contribute.

When I’m coming from a state of panic and my intention is to only increase stats or page rank, guest posting quickly becomes a contest, a competition or a chore. My writing becomes dull and lacks creativity and fresh ideas.

If I write when I feel rushed, out-of-sync, or overwhelmed my energy is about desperation and greed, not guest blogging.

When I’m authentically myselfsimple, clear and honestmy writing unfolds effortlessly. Each post becomes a relationship building masterpiece of quality content. It benefits everyone.

When my intention is sincere my guest posts offer insight, wisdom, entertainment, or delight to all readers. They’re more likely to have an “aha” moment or find a solution to a problem.

I want my message to give you a sense of buoyancy, a lightness of being. I want my words to take you to higher ground.

Last January, I learned to infuse my articles with loving energy. It is my hope that you know it, sense it and feel it in the gaps between my words.

Everyone wants to build a better blog. Everyone wants to move up in the ranks. What I’ve discovered is the next level isn’t about numbers, statistics, or SEO.

It’s about the ability to change your emotional state. It’s about writing what’s in your heart with an intention of doing good and serving others.

How to Create a Feel Good Writing Shift

  • Write about happy memories.
  • Write about you children or pets.

  • Describe an adventure on your bucket list.

  • Write in nature; describe the smells, sights, and sounds.

  • Schedule some time to play with ideas and words.

  • Learn Haiku.

  • Write about a joyful time in an ordinary day.
  • Write for fun.

  • Lead with delight.

  • Indulge in and describe a “wow.”

  • Listen to your heart.

  • People-watch, pay attention to color, perfume, smiles.

  • Write what you see and feel.

  • Write about feel good moments.
  • Choose bright, refreshing, and uplifting words.

  • Tell us about the best advice you’ve ever received.

  • Write about a turning point in your life.

  • Create a gratitude list.

The world is on information overload. It’s an honor and privilege when someone chooses to read my blog out of the millions available.

As a runner, I have come across great webs of spiders glistening in the morning dew. If you've ever tapped an edge of a web you saw the vibrations of the patterns move across the web.

We are all connected, and like the vibrations on of a spider web, the energy I choose, the words I write, and the decisions I make send forth patterns of energy throughout the world.

My decision, to blog with joy sends pockets full of loving energy into the blogosphere reaching and touching people from all over the world. Blogging gives me the opportunity to help people change one guest post at a time.

From the write space my writing is effortlessly delightful and powerful. It gathers momentum due to an invisible magnetism that pulls new readers forward.

I invite all writers to join me in the write space. Let your good vibes roll!

“Write only if you cannot live without writing. Write only what you alone can write.” -Elie Wiesel

When we try to connect with people in a forced way the connection is weak. We try so hard to be something we aren’t and the connection is based off of a false impression. The more I write the more authentic my voice becomes. I become more comfortable saying weird things. I feel more comfortable not saying too much.

You make a great point Tess, we need to understand where and when we create at our best because that’s the place that people can create a deep connection with us.

    Hello Tess,
Since I started blogging I have tried to focus on writing from my heart for the purpose of giving something to others.
I worry sometimes that I should be a bit more concerned about promoting, seo the like. I sometimes worry that I am not attracting enough readers, but then I worry that focusing on those things would be a detriment to my writing.
So, thank you for re-affirming my intention.

    Sandra,
And here’s a wow back at you for the last post I read at http://www.Alwayswithin.com!

    Katie,
That a huge compliment coming from the metaphor whiz! Thanks!

    Jenny,
It sounds like your doing the “write thing” in the “write place” to me! SEO can be second after your heart:)

My posts are always better received when I write from the heart. I don’t necessarily get a lot of comments, but I do get emails and that means even more to me. I never wrote posts that were SEO optimized because then they would be boring!

Thanks for the Elie Wiesel quote. Admittedly I think I could live without writing, I think I’m better served to publish in a different way. However, I do appreciate the 2nd part of the quote – A “kick” I needed today.

I love that idea. I am on board with the “write place.” It is true, we simply cannot be at our best if we are writing from a low mood and attitude. When we are conscious of our connection with Universal Mind and embrace, our work flows through us brightly and bountifully.

Ok, up to a certain point I agree with you Tess… a certain emotional state is required to write posts, especially when it comes to self-improvement and similar topics…

However, for me personally it does not work always. I prefer to explore the topic in detail. After that research, I do not need a strong emotional state to write or inspiration. I just write. Sometimes I write posts about personal experience or opinion, then the situation is different…

Of course I’m not saying that I do not love what I write, so that the emotion of love for the subject is always present….

P.S. Tips for “Feel Good Writing Shift” are great! :)

    Take care… Marko

Beautifully put Tess. It’s exactly the reason I’ve been writing less frequently. When I was writing out of the same fear that you described: – page rankings, stats, etc….my work was never as good but when it came from the heart that’s all that mattered but the resonance that people felt make was may more important to me.

    Love it! x

    Hi Tess,
Words of wisdom! I feel the same way. If I have to blog because I’m sticking to some schedule I created – then the posts don’t come from my heart. I try for two posts a week. Sometimes I do it and sometimes I just can’t pull it out of me. When it comes from your heart it has the impact of 10 posts! I can feel all the love coming from your posts – and that’s what counts.

    Hi Tess,

What a great post–filled with words of wisdom and accurate insights. I was starting to get myself tied up in knots about all the guidelines and “rules” for great blog posts and I found myself starting to really dislike the writing process. A dear friend of mine suggested that I just write from the heart and write what wants to come through and by adopting that strategy all of the baggage and frustrations just dropped away.

I loved the image of the spider’s web as the metaphor for how we’re all connected. One of my spiritual teachers referred to this connection we all have to each other and something larger than ourselves as the “inner net”.

I hope you’re feeling lots better now.

    Bright blessings!

    Hi Tess,

Thank you for your list which gives me an insight and serves as a valuable guide for my writings.

When I started blogging half a year ago, and until recently, I made a grave mistake of focusing too much on SEO, etc…. I neglected on writing contents. As Jenny Ann Fraser noted, these became detrimental to my writings. Now I focus on writing from the heart.

I can feel the sincerity and the authentic love from your heart with the words you write and this is what matter most.

I’d say your posts has that “Umph!” – that power of love in truly helping others.

    Thanks for sharing

We can feel your energy .. and the love you have for your family, friends and blogging pals and the support you give us all .. enjoy yourself and your writing .. the words shine through .. Hilary

    So true Tess.

Some days the words come and on other days they don’t. The key is not to panic, but to be open when you do hit the writing flow.

Keep living from your heart Tess – it is serving you well.

Tess, what a marvelous post!!! You would have to know that I’d love this. You outline some loving and powerful practices for those of us who desire to write with heart. I always listen to my heart before beginning to write, even a blog post. I use the opportunity as spiritual practice. I light a candle, put on music. I even have certain music that whooshes me into the heart zone (anything by Soundings of the Planet – they imbue their music with a certain heart frequency [though they call it the Earth Resonation frequency] – their website is soundings.com) and it works! And to breathe, consciously breathe, throughout my writing. And if it ever feels like I am writing from my ego or with a hidden agenda, I don’t write. I wait until the time and my vibration is right.

I am glad you took Evita’s advice. Your work glows with love! I always feel it and am grateful for it.

With love and bold joy, just for you today,

    Tess,

Great article, this is truly helpful and important information for my consideration. After getting into a writing routine it feels like writing a post becomes something that should be done for sake of consistency instead of inspiration. Having that “writers place” really provides the means to produce the best work possible. Its a very inspiring point you make about how our words impact other people and for this reason we should really consider what insight we share with the world. Thanks!

    Tess,
Evita’s advice is spot on, for me, anyway. It was never about the numbers, though I sure read enough advice to the contrary. I had to ask myself, “Why? To what end? Isn’t the message ‘it’?”

You asked if we know. Yes, I know. :)

    Amit,
Yes yes yes! The other stuff is secondary or I lose my joy.

    Alex,
Thanks you and yes I know those days. I walk away from the computer and go and do something else…then I try again from a better place. I appreciate your support.

    Jan,
Oh I do like your idea. I don’t think the candle would work cuz I’d burn the house down. I have a tendency to print things out. Especially if they are cool posts I need to process and thing about. I’m going to check out the music. I appreciate your love and support. I’m sending you some back for your Bliss Chick adventures.
    Joe,
Yes I feel I have a responsibility with my words and just like words I speak are powerful so are the ones I write. My grand children and great grandchildren will be reading this blog someday;)

We live in a society where we are taught to say things that we do not feel for for ourselves. Often we take a ride upon someone else’s feelings instead of being true to our own unique senses. We often – think- we need to be nice….or to stay objective. We are often afraid that we will be rejected if we don’t stay inside the established boundaries of protocol.

People and objects and energies speak to us. If we neglect to respond, they haunt us till their messages are spoken. Once re-connected…..when an answer arrives from our questioning, we return to where we began…..LOVE

Therefore, our writings here upon the land of blogs helps us to sort out our questions, where we can see the answers……..and are then free to return to an open Heart.

Loved your post. When we started our blog, Iwas obsessed with the stats. I worked endlessly only to realize that our blog about happiness was making me very unhappy. Obviously that wouldn’t do!! Took a break, didn’t care about the metrics, write when I felt like it and it now it is a happy pursuit once again. Perhaps that will slow our progress, but since we’re happy, who cares!!

Yay! You are blogging from a place of joy. Fantastic. Yep, that’s the only way to do it. Every once in a while, I’ll put a little pressure on myself to write. I’ve got no short of a hundred topics I can barely wait to write about. However, if I’m not feeling inspired or if I’m having an “off” day, I absolutely positively have to wait…until it feels right. Usually I publish a post once or twice a week, but most recently I let two weeks go between posts. That’s okay. It’s simply how it had to be done. I trust that my readers still like me and will come back!

Glad to know you’re in a good groove – that makes you so attractive as a blogger…to “choose” to write from a place of joy. Kudos to you, Tess! Appreciate the honest confession. :)

I totally agree and follow this advice on my blog heart and mind, as it is my heart and soul, I am slow blogger, writer from my heart on subjects that are close to my heart and I am rather enjoying the slow and steady progress I have made.

I have realized that when other bloggers try to write what is popular, trendy, if it is not from heart, it gets lost on readers. Well said.
