How To Choose An Adventurous Life

“We need more adventurous people, inventors and investors in this country doing new things,” Flour Mills of Fiji cahirman of the business community at the post-Budget Forum in Suva 11/22/2008

Do you want to discover and explore new places and see everything there is to see? Are you a trailblazer creating a path that others will gladly follow? Do  you have an adventurous spirit, and get excited about trying new things?

Where we are today is a result of the choices we have made. Our greatest freedom is our freedom to choose. We choose how we think, how we speak and what we do. We choose what we focus on, whether we’ll procrastinate today or take action toward our goals and dreams.

We choose to have fun or we choose to live a ho-hum life.  We choose to try new things or hold back in fear. If we are to succeed we must learn how to choose well. Our choices define our quality of life.

I have a love for life and a thirst for adventure. I choose to take risks, develop new skills and abilities. I want to push the limit and live to my full potential.

Choose your thrill. What is on your must see and must do list? 2009 is just around the corner. What new, fun and bold experiences do you want to have?

My friend Carol’s son Luke was an adventure seeker while attending the University of Michigan. He loved windsurfing and would seek out the best places in the United States to practice his craft. The sight of his old red car with his surfing gear on top gave a clear message to the world: I suck the morrow out of life!

I remember watching his slides from his trip around the world with a college buddy. His favorite country was Fiji. His friends favorite stop was peeling carrots with Mother Theresa in Calcutta. I was in the middle of my parenting years at the time. I remember thinking, ” Could there actually be something this exciting in my future?”

If you want an adventurous life you need to plan adventure.  Since moving to Arizona I’ve begun to hike and I’m taking golf lessons. These activities are new to me.

My daughter Kara works for South West airlines where parents fly any where South West flies for free!
We have taken several trips this year and are busy planning for 2009.

We want to go to British Columbia and Seattle Washington. There is talk of going to Scotland and Ireland  as well, I have relatives there. I also want to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico and California again. They are only a hour flight away.

My big dream is to go on an African Safari. I am currently making a five year plan for this goal.

Adventure doesn’t have to be about travel. You can be adventurous in any activity you choose.

Choose your comfort zone.  If you are one who is just beginning to dip your toe in the water find a risk taker and model their behavior. Who do you know that is spontanious and free, always piling life high on their plate with an extra dash of sprinkles on top? It doesn’t matter how wild or daring your adventure is, what matters is that you try something new. Start where you are and build your ‘bold muscles’ as you go. Take one bold baby step at a time and soon you will forget you ever had a comfort zone.

Choose a thirst for adventure. Do what makes your heart race. Go to an amusement park and head for the breathtaking rides. Be the first in your party to order the new item on the menu. Introduce yourself first at a networking event. Paint your living room a bold new color. Learn to flirt and make the first move. Don’t hold back. Be daring. Be first…every chance you get. Make new friends, go new places and learn new skills.

Choose to become a lover of life. How can you make each day the best day of your life? Learn to be bold in all areas. Take a different route to work. Try a different flavor of coffee. Look for opportunities to help others get ahead. Choose to be calm and happy. Let go of small irritations. Look for joy and laughter in every situation. Daydream. Be the life of the party. I dare you.

Choose to say, “Yes.” Do what have you always wanted but never dared try. Don’t fear risks. Take measured risks. Know that you will make mistakes, there will be embarrassing moments and you may fall flat on your face. If this happens get back up and learn from you mistakes. Latch on to what life has to offer. You miss 100% of the chances you never take.

What you will gain from increasing your adventure quotient:

Self-belief and self-confidence
Love for what makes you different
You will learn to overcome your fears
You will reap the benefits of taking action
Independence of thought and action
You’ll know and understand your strenghts and weaknesses
You’ll possess courage

This post is making me question if I choose to be tired most of the time. Perhaps I’m choosing poor sleeping habits and poor exercise habits.

I take one solo adventure travel trip a year. I leave my world behind and explore the world on my own terms. I love each and every minute of my annual solo vacation.

Singing my 12 songs before 100 people in a four months will be plenty enough adventure and will pretty-much blow the whole comfort level for yours truly. I think I’ll be ready for it. (I hope.)

Your site is very eye-appealing, BTW.

Stacey, I would suggest starting to exercise twice a week (same days weekly) then increase it from there and before you know it you’ll be up to 5 days a week. Love your blog!

Jannie, What 12 songs, your amazing!

I believe in the bold life, and I appreciate the spirit of this blog.

I think the boldest thing I have yet done is civil disobedience. It made me stronger inside myself, and stronger in the world. I recommend going all out like that for something you deeply believe in. . . . . it makes us free. I am offering to give coverage in my blog to people who step out boldly to fight global warming: http://www.diamondcutlife.org/join-wendell-berry-and-bill-mckibben/

Wonderful post on adventurous living! I have to admit that lately I haven’t been living the most adventurous life, but I really think this post will help me to increase the amount of high adventure experiences in my life. I love the way this is written — with a plan of action and additional tips to help us on our way. Great stuff!

Is it possible to somehow escape societies normalities? The norm is usually attend school to get a degree, get a job, and then maybe settle down with someone and make some brats. I know their are differences in whatever path you choose, whether you choose to have kids or what job you pursue and so on, but im looking for something more. nice post
