Get Unstuck and Achieve Flow

by Tess

Life has no smooth road for any of us and in the bracing atmosphere of a high aim the very roughness stimulates the climber to steadier steps, till the legend, over steep ways to the stars, fulfills itself. ~ W. C. Doane

Being stuck is uncomfortable. It's not a pretty scene. There is a tendency to fight it with worry, fear, and impatience.

You may want to deny it and attempt to get unstuck as soon as possible. Doing so, will sink you deeper into the muck and mud of your tired and stale thoughts and emotions.

The more you resist being stuck, the more stuck you become.

In the past few weeks I've become unstuck. In order to get there, I let go of extra projects and work.

I took time out to get clear and honest with where I've been and where I'm going.

I'm back in the flow and reunited with my creativity, magic, and genius.

I'm ready to move forward, refreshed and energized. I'm ready to do great things.

Read on to discover what you can do to become unstuck, clear your mind and set yourself free.

Embrace your now. Accept the place that you are in. Make peace with it. Breathe in the present moment and breathe out any staleness.  Know that there is nothing to fear. This temporary condition will lead to your next step. Be willing to remain open and learn from it.

Restore your energy. Don't fight it. Spend time outside. Breathe in the sights and sounds of nature. Revel in fresh air. Allow the sun, wind, or rain to take you away from your problems. Nature will never disappoint you. Never.

Do something with your hands.  Set your intention to play and have fun. Draw, paint, carve, knit, cook, sew or sculpt. Use your imagination and create something you normally wouldn't.

Think less not more.  Listen to your favorite music and sing at the top of your lungs. Watch an old movie and put yourself into another time and space. Lose track of yourself and your issues.

Write out your problem. Release it in your journal, write out the details, express your anger and frustration. Then tell your problem or situation that you'll get back to it next Tuesday. You have now made space for the solution to unfold.

Get physical. Go for a run, work out at the gym, take a hike. Move, walk, run, jump. Sweat out your issues and stress. You'll release endorphins that will take you to a better place. I've never felt better after a good work out.

Create distance. Imagine that you are above your situation floating on a cloud. Look down and examine it from all angles. Notice how you are not attached to being stuck. Continue to float. As for guidance. Be open another perspective, be willing to do things differently.

Get honest. Go within. What's really bothering you? What's really weighing you down? Is it a relationship, an addiction, or lack of motivation? What steps are necessary to go forward? Be fearlessly honest with yourself. Create a different future.

Surrender. Let go of unfairness, being a victim, and comparing yourself to others. Let go of resentment and blame. Forgive yourself. Forgive others. Forgive the world. Drop your story. Drop your baggage.

Think about what's right with your life.  Focus on the good. What did you get right today? What went right? Express gratitude. Repeat this routine daily. Your solution will find you. You'll feel alive again.

Uplevel your life. Fall in love with yourself. Change what isn't working. Step by step create a better reality. Take action. Give yourself permission to shine. Own your greatness. Savor all of life. Now is the time. Flow never felt so good!

My friend and I have a term we use for what we do when we’re feeling stuck: pattern interruption.

I’m such a creature of habit and comfort that when I get stuck, I could stay there for a very long time if I didn’t do something to re-route myself. That’s when pattern interruption comes in. For instance, usually I get up in the morning, make myself breakfast and tea, hop on the laptop, and while away the hours until my workout. Sometimes I feel so “stuck” in the first part of the morning that I can’t motivate to work out, so I skip it and move onto lunch and more hour-whiling. To break that up, some mornings I get up and before I have time to think about it, I’m off and running (literally). No breakfast, no computer, nothing but movement the second my feet hit the floor.

Earlier this year I felt uninspired, in general, so rather than stay put in my house I started taking road trips and hanging out with new friends who lived within driving distance. I came back from each trip with renewed energy and motivation.

Tess, as always, great post. Here’s to getting unstuck and feeling fine!

    Megan,
New people, new places, new routines… I love pattern interuptions! Sometimes when we’re stuck it’s just fine to let it be. Don’t fight it but you already know that;) xo

    Tess,
I’ve spent the last 1/2 of the summer and the first part of Fall being stuck in the two books that I’m writing at the same time (not the best idea by the way!). I so agree with so much of what you wrote. I esp. think that exercise will get those creative juices going. And I really love the idea of embracing your now! I’m finally going forward with just one and I’m going to follow your advice to push me forward. Thank you so much!

    xoxo

PS I love Oak Creek Canyon. Just seeing your picture made me homesick for the time that my parents lived in Sedona. We used to stay there for Thanksgiving every year. We miss it so much!!

Betsy, 2 books? I tried that and it didn’t work for me either! Can’t get enough of Sedona either. Going next week with a friend who is coming to visit AZ for the first time! Let me know how I can help you promote your books.

    Hi Tess,

Love the tips. This one is what I need right now – “Do something with your hands.” I’m missing that part of my life right now. I used to quilt and and miss playing with the fabric and creating something fun. Need to find that time to get back to it. Great as always!!

    Cathy,
It’s good to balance creativity online with creativity off line. Fall is a good season to work with our hands on the projects we love.

I like to meditate which I guess is similar to embracing your now. I also like doing something active although I haven’t worked out in a long time.

Once again, Tess, your timing is perfect. This is exactly what I needed to read today. I feel like I’ve been resisting and struggling in my current predicament which is only burying me deeper in the muck. Thank you so much for all the great ideas! It’s funny how I know how much being in nature rejuvenates me. I live in the woods and am surrounded by nature but, like Megan, I get stuck in my routine in front of the computer and chasing the kids around.

I recently started plugging into my ipod while cooking and cranking some old favorites. It’s like revitalizing a fun part of my past. It feels so freeing!

I know that releasing my resistance to the current situation, my attachment to an outcome and my desire to control the uncontrollable will all turn things around quickly. I’m off to my yoga and meditation practice now to allow all that to happen.

    Paige,
You’re on the right track. When you let go what you need will find you with ease. Who hasn’t been there and the more we obsess and worry the more we push our good away. Focus on what you want not what you don’t want. xo

Nice. This I’ll have to read over and over until it all sinks in.
