Ben rocking out in the kitchen

Guest post by Andrea Scher

Ben was in a talent show at the local toy store last year.

When I asked him what he’d like to do, he said he’d like to perform one of his songs. His “songs” at the time were a mashup of jewish folk tunes and heavy metal. The likes of which this world might never have seen before!

He practiced outside the toy store with me, “Hine ma tov uma-na-im… (and now insert growly, deep, heavy metal voice) shevet achim gam yavat…”

It was, in short, awesome.

Ben was so excited to get on stage when we entered the store that he insisted on MC’ing the whole thing and asked if he could perform first. As I sat in the audience with my iphone video all ready to go, I saw the surprise in his eyes. It was fear but it was also surprise at how scared he actually was. He didn’t expect this at all! As a result of the sheer, unexpected terror, nothing came out of his mouth.

You can do it! all of us called out. The entire room of kids cheered him on. But he crumpled, literally, and fell to the ground. I can’t do it! he shouted from the floor.

Another kid went instead and did a fart song by putting her hand inside her armpit. (Super impressive I might add) Then a boy who was great at yo-yo did his thing.

Ben was ready to try again. I readied my camera, said a little prayer and all of us cheered again, but he was terrified and ran off the stage.

“Try starting with your back to us!” I encouraged, and that seemed to help. He started his song with his back to the audience and eventually mustered up the courage to turn around. He improvised a song, a hilarious mix of metal and rap and jewishness, and we all cheered when it was over.

He was a bit mortified by the whole thing.

But here’s what I want to share with you: Ben is now LEGENDARY at Mr. Mopp’s toy store in Berkeley. Every time we go in there, the owner says, “Ben! We loved your song at the talent show! You have a lot of fans here.” Other employees will literally come out of the back and gather around. “Ben is here! Yeah, the one from the talent show!”

They love him.

And my guess is that they love him because he was brave.

They love him because he was human.

He was afraid and he went for it anyway.

He sang a song, his song. And even though he couldn’t quite look anyone in the eyes when he did it, he did it anyway.

Ben once asked me what a legend was. I told him it was someone that people talked about for many years after they were gone, even hundreds of years, because they were so extraordinary. “Like Jesus?” he asked. “Yes. Like Jesus. And Miles Davis.”

“I want to be a legend,” he told me.

I think he’s well on his way. And he is teaching me that being brave + vulnerable is key. The crowd loves you all the more for it.

What I'm grateful for?

My Tribe! I'm grateful for all the family, friends and readers who inspire me even more than I inspire them. I'm grateful that in our crazy and hectic world you choose to visit The Bold Life community regularly! I'm grateful that out of the 7 billion people in the world you find something that I have to say worthwhile and helpful.

I'm grateful for your company, help, comments, social media connections and purchases. I'm grateful that I have opportunity to support you and that you allow me into your lives and your hearts. I'm grateful for the love that you share and the bold and courageous lives that you lead. Know that I care. Know that you are loved!

2. I'm grateful for my family and the gift of forgiveness.

I am far from perfect. When you practice unconditional love you know that you can mess up and be forgiven. When your closest relatives and friends do the same, all is well. Even if one of us is unforgiving, I always remember that nobody can stop us from loving one another. I taught my granddaughter H'oponopono this year and she loves it: I'm sorry, please forgive me, I thank you and I love you!

3. I'm grateful for the lessons I learn from difficult situations. My sister has terminal cancer. This one thing has held an umbrella of present moment living over my head. It puts the impermanence of life front and center. It reminds me of the little control I have. It has made me more loving and forgiving.

4. I'm grateful for the wisdom to break away from my electronics and play. It's so tempting to get stuck in a work addiction especially when you do something you love and you can take it with you anywhere. There is nothing as wonderful as the sand between your toes or the dirt under your fingernails. I'm grateful for wonder!

5. I'm grateful for the freedom to choose love over fear. I'm grateful that I feel connected to all of life. I'm grateful for Byron Katie, Marianne Williamson, Gabrielle Bernstein and their desire to keep it real. I'm grateful for my bloggers alliance, tech help, mentors, mastermind groups, coaching clients and editors.

6. I'm grateful for everything! I'm grateful for New Balance running shoes, my health and green juice. I'm grateful for my daughter Kara who is the best flight attendant on earth, for Southwest airlines and for flying free. I'm grateful for Chris Guillebeau, The World Domination Summit and all of the goodness that he brings out in people.

I think 2014 is going to be a breakthrough year! I'd love to have you participate in my 4 – week ecourse Thrive: Living Life Fully. We begin December 1st. It just $27, 40% off this month only!

The following is an interview with my good friend, Victor Schueller.

Victor is a  is the “Professor of Positivity and Possibility.”  As a coach, speaker, and author, Victor helps people learn how to deal with life’s tough situations. Today we talk specifically about his new program Get Fit for Life. Victor is an expert, he lost 70 lbs. in one year!

Why is your program called “Fit for Life,” and what is it about?

The reason why this program is called “Fit for Life” is because I wanted to create a wellness program that not only focuses on losing weight, but also focusing on how people can keep the weight off and maintain an active lifestyle.

The program is all about giving people the tools necessary to maintain a good level of wellness and fitness for the rest of their lives.

What do you see as the biggest obstacle to maintaining good health and fitness?

The biggest obstacle I see is overcoming the mental aspect of personal wellness.  Many times people look at losing weight as the goal.  They treat it as a destination.

Losing weight is a goal, but they forget about the journey that follows, which is keeping the weight off through making healthy choices.  It’s hard keeping the weight off, and that’s because our mental makeup usually is programmed to work against our efforts.

What does your program offer that others don’t?

My program offers specific strategies that a person can learn and apply that helps prime them mentally to keep the weight off for good.  I designed the program after the “formula” I stumbled upon and applied when I was losing weight and still apply today to keep it off and stay fit and active.

I share not only the “losing weight” success strategies, but also the “mental” strategies I learned and applied.  Most programs simply focus on the physical aspects of wellness, which usually means helping participants to lose weight through healthy eating and increased physical activity.

My program looks at weight loss as the first step and not the ultimate objective.  My program is designed to help people become non-reliant on any weight loss programs for the rest of their lives.

I want this to be the last program they’ll ever have to do to reach their weight and health goals.  I also would like to think that I have developed a program that can work for anyone, without the reliance upon sophisticated equipment, exotic supplementation, or special diets.

I like to teach people how to lose weight and eat healthy, no matter where they live or where they go.

What does the program consist of?

The program is six weeks long, and will consist of something new each week.  It may be a video that specifically addresses basic and advanced concepts of weight loss and dietary modifications, or it could be a live session, where I will do live training and take questions from participants.

I will also be having a forum, where participants can go to for support and help from me or others who are enrolled.  One of the most exciting aspects of the program will be that I will be opening up to the participants and asking for their input.

I want to know what they want to know and what they want to focus on.  I will take their feedback and weave it into the course, so that I make sure that I am specifically addressing those requests as part of the program.

In addition to those resources, I’ll be sharing my exact activities that I have used to stay fit, including the same stretches I do, the same exercises I do, and the same vitamins and supplements that I use now.

I’ll be throwing in some other bonuses too, like some free audio programs to help address the difficulty of finding time to exercise and the other mental aspects of keeping fit, as well as an opportunity to do a one-on-one session with me where participants can ask me anything they want.

How can people find out more about this program?

First of all, I recommend that people take advantage of my free videos, where they can get over two hours’ worth of lessons from me.

On those videos, I share how I lost 70 pounds in one year, I discuss whether someone can eat junk food and still lose weight, and and I answer to the question, “How can I speed up my metabolism?”

Those videos are all available here.
Secondly, if you like what you see, and you’re thinking about enrolling, the best way to find out more about the program is to visit my website here.

I closed the comments to give you time to check out Victor's awesome program. Also please help me spread the word by sharing on Facebook and Twitter! Thanks so much!
