10 Habits That Changed My Life

1. Being an early riser. I grew up working on our family farm where “sleeping in” didn’t exist. We were either in the barn, fields or at the Farmer’s Market by 6:00 am. This habit never changed.

2) Prayer. I’ve learned to pray throughout the day. I pray for family, friends, myself, the homeless, our world leaders, my enemies etc. There is a prayer chapel called Silent Unity. The ministers on duty there pray 24/7 for 30 days for one’s request. (I call every 30 days.)

3) Reading. I’ve been a voracious reader since 9th grade. I am who I am because I love to read.

4) I keep my ego in check. I know immediately when I’m wrong or have done something wrong. I do my best to correct this as soon as possible. I would rather be happy than right. I’ve given up needing “the last word.” I either come from love or fear. Anything fear based is my ego or lower self.

5) I apologize. My intention is to never hurt anyone. When I have hurt someone I say, “I’m sorry.” Apologizing is not losing it’s winning.

6) I’m generous. I will share my money, time and knowledge. I volunteer. I leave generous tips. I help others get where they want to be. I’ve learned there is enough for everyone. I can’t out give God.

7) I’ve learned to walk away from unhealthy relationships. Even when it hurts more to go than to stay. I teach people how to treat me. If they don’t treat me well I know it’s best to move on. I can choose to love someone from a distance.

8) I don’t take things personally. I have to remind myself of this from time to time. I don’t have to worry about what anyone thinks of me except my “Higher Power.”

9) I use affirmation cards to “change my thoughts”when I’m obssessing, catastrophizing, or fearing something. The more time I allow my thoughts to be happy and positive the more I stay in the flow or zone.

10) I mind my own business. This is the habit I fall back on the most. It’s easy for me to get in my adult children’s business under the guise of “I know better. ” Yeah, right! I catch myself and go back to no. 4!

Byron Katie, author of “The Work” reminds us there are 3 kinds of business.
My business, other people’s business and God’s business.

I only have to be in my business!

I am not perfect and never will be. I will continue to make mistakes until I die. I only need to learn from them and move on.

How about you, what good habits have helped you live a better life?

    Hi Tess,
I’m off to have a GREAT Monday! I’m excited that it’s Monday, and all the new possibilities the week ahead holds for me.

Great habits you’ve shared today. I can relate with several - and I can also work on several of these myself and I know doing so will make my life even better. So, thank you for sharing them.

My habits to add: 1. Listen more, speak less. I’ve found that when I really concentrate on the other person when we’re engaged in conversation - there is so much I can learn by listening. So, I really work at actively listening first, and then when I speak I am hopefully coming from a point of offering something that the other person can really relate to.
    2. Exercise is good for the body and mind. Exercising regularly not only has been good for my physical body, I’ve also found much benefit for my mind as well. When strength training, there is a very strong mind-body connection that must be there for me to be successful. When doing aerobic exercise, I’ve found this is a good time to release the “thinker” in me. Both great ways of engaging the mind more in my life.

your number ONE changed my life as well.

made me more productive and ENTIRELY more optimistic as well!

Liara Covert 04.27.09 at 5:02 am

Everyday is full of unseen reasons to be grateful for every moment. Thanks for this uplifting reminder that physical life experience enables each person to gain priceless insight into why he exists and what he can do to help make this world a more peaceful and loving place. Change beings with each person.

    Lance,
You’re no. 1 has taken me forever to get. I’m mostly there and at other times fall back. Sigh…I feel the same about exercising after 25 years plus of running. Still trying to get in the groove of weight lifting.

    Miz Fit,
Oh what a blessing in disguise it was in childhood!

    Liara,
I always gain such insight from your post as well. I even print some off and save them. Shine on!

    Keith 04.27.09 at 12:05 pm

Hello Tess! Yet another awesome post! I love to come to your blog, it’s always uplifting…and challenging! I really liked what you wrote about Mondays! I am always telling people that Monday is another day of life. No reason to make it out as a “bad” day! :-)

Love the list of habits! I make it a daily habit to keep in shape physically by exercise. That really helps to keep me sharp mentally also.

Another habit is to listen to people, really listen to what they have to say and try to see their perspective before I respond.

Thanks again Tess for a great read. You’re making a difference!

Prayer and being an early riser. Just being able to exercise these two makes a big and lasting difference in our day :-) I’d add to that the power of MUSIC. It helps get me into a higher and lighter vibration.

Tess The Bold Life 04.28.09 at 9:19 am

    Lance,
I’ll be working on listening for the rest of my life! I don’t think I’ll ever be good enough:) Exercising is fantastic however I still need to find my mind-body connection for strenght training!

    Miz,
Ohhhh I’m honored you’ve stopped by. Rising early was a gift in disguise growing up, beyond what I’ve ever imagined.

    Liara,
Your words of wisdom are always so needed. Yes daily gratitude for daily opportunities in unknown areas!

    Keith,
I like that line, “no need to make it a bad day.” Simple as that!

    Tabitha,
Yes Lance is so wise. Be sure to check out his blog.

    Mark,

Thanks so much for stopping by.

    Jocelyn,
Music what a great reminder for me. I finally put some on my ipod I’ve had for 3 years!

Hi Tess .. it’s good to have you back .. though I’ve only just found you .. that’s a really magic Monday .. albeit it’s late Tuesday here! Imust get to bring my ipod into my life .. as it obviously prove usefuly.. per Jocelyn (I take off the Mask) above.

I too liked Lance’s comments .. I try and listen and mostly manage it .. perhaps I’m tired now & tend to talk when I’m in a conversation - but I’m still asking questions .. and today wrote a letter on my blog to a 9 year old who’s visiting her mother in hospital - so I wasn’t so bad at talking .. let my fingers do it this morning!

Thanks I’m looking forward to participating as much as I can ..
    All the best

Great list, Tess. Useful and a good way to get to know you. Your posts are always just the right length, too! The habits that have helped me sound like clichés, but here are a few.

I make sure my family and friends reallycome first. Easy to say, but how often do we inadvertently neglect them because we think they’ll always ‘be there’?

I’ve learned that the best way to avoid pain is to stop resisting what is and start working on why I’m resisting, what my judgements about others are really teaching me about myself.

I believe it’s better to be kind than right and avoid bitterness by mentally blessing anyone I might have seen as an ‘enemy’ before I learned better. People are generally doing the best they can with what they’ve got.

There’s perfection, somewhere, in every situation and it’s a great habit to look for it.

I ask myself every day how I can contribute. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give others is to listen to them with our hearts, really listen.

I try to stop shoulding all over myself and identify more more coulds, needs and wants. I try to love my own humanity as well as other folks’.

I love details and send out silent prayers of gratitude every day for all of my senses and faculties as well as for my loved ones .

I make time for reading and writing every day. It’s one way of learning who I am.

I try to get enough water and sleep, treats and fun.

I pray by being present and connected, I learn by being open and listening and I work till I’m tired.

What a wonderful list! I love your quote I would rather be happy than be ‘right’- words to live by!
I would add, forgive and let go.

    Vered - MomGrind 04.29.09 at 9:40 am

“I don’t take things personally” - still working on that. Getting better, too, but I still have a long way to go before I’m truly free of caring about what others say/ think about me.

    Angie,
That quote is the secret to any relationship!

    Vared,
