It Just Doesn't Get Any Funster Than That!

I've returned home after my 3 week trip of visiting friends and family. I'm sooo far behind with reading all your blogs and I'm planning on catching up this weekend!

Today I’m talkin’ to my blogging’ buddy Jannie Funster, a musician and “queen of fun and funny.” Jannie is crazy, awesome and authentic. She has helped me become a better person and a better writer.

Jannie is a currently working on her 2nd CD!

Jannie will have you laughin’ out loud with her stories about her family, music, bra flingin’ and doughnut eatin’ contests, and a whole lot more!
I laugh at her content, comments to her readers, and comments she leaves on other blogs! She has a cool “blue eye” avatar and I’m always scanning for it in the comment section on other blogs  because I’m not missing out on one flippin’ laugh!

Jannie, whose music has influenced you the most?

Well, ahh, Gosh. (Chuckles. Sips hibiscus tea. Pets sleeping cat.)
Hmm. Who knows what strains of summer sunset sonnet and wild winter winds have traipsed through these fibers of my being? And the fibers of all songsters who have come before? And those yet to be born?

But (Chuckles more…) Let’s say – who did I listen to a lot? I totally od’ed on the Rolling Stones from ages 16 to 18. In college I hung out at the top of the chestnut tree with Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Harry Chapin, Jin Croce, Meatloaf, ELO, and many other friends. Later I danced on oceans with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Handel, Bach, U2 et al.  Too many influences to name probably. ? I hear the Beatles are good – I think I’ll start listening to them next.

The Bold Life:

I love the oldies but goodies. The Beatles…yes I heard they were good as well. ! I was in fourth grade when I begged my mom to buy me bubble gum that came with Beatle trading cards! Darn I wish I would have kept those cards;)

When did you first realize you could sing?

I remember performing “Put Your Hand In The Hand” a capella in a church talent show when I was 8 or 9, and the next week friends at school kept asking me to sing it again and again.  So I did!  And I’ve kept on singing. But I did not have formal singing lessons until I was 34.

It’s only been maybe in the past year I feel I can sing well. It’s been a process, one I felt like giving up on many times when I’d play my home-recordings back, hear all the off notes – and cry.   But I persevered!  And here I am.
Whoo-hoo!!

The Bold Life:

It’s been so much fun watching you progress. I so enjoyed the way you shared your journey of creating your first CD. I remember thinking “A Star Is Born.” I even left that in a comment for you!

Who is your favorite comedian?

Cool question! My all-time fave is George Carlin, God rest his soul. The energy of Robin Williams in his stand-up is great too.  Oh – and Steven Wright! You know the “No matter what temperature a room is, it’s still room temperature,” Steven Wright?  I love quirky kooky comics.  The Monty Python guys are brilliant!!

The Bold Life:

I’m not sure who Steve Wright is…I better go find him on You Tube. Now that I think of it I’ve never looked for any comedian there. I’m so intense at times…

When did you first realize you were funny?

What?? Am I funny? Maybe sometimes, eh? I guess we all are in our own ways.  I do remember they called me “Jolly Jan” in junior high.

And now I’m officially Jannie “Funster.” I lucked into that last name when I presented a funny-ish tune at a songwriting seminar a few years ago, and a week later I’d banded with 3 other fun-loving musicians into a comedic conspiracy of song, dubbing ourselves “The Funsters.”

The Bold Life:

I always thought Funster was your last name (chuckling)! How lucky the others are to be in your band. Do you need anybody else? I can’t sing but I can smile and look good!

What does a typical day look like for you?

Ahhh, coffee and chocolate cake around 6:30, followed by 11 buttock lifts on each side, 2.5 deep knee bends, then 3 leaping splits over the laundry hamper with a loud whoo- hoo on each.

Get The Child up and off to school.

Chase some squirrels around the woods.

Come home and dream up blog posts, songs and poems.

Skip outside and take pictures of clouds, sticks, and the occasional stray dog.

Eat a light lunch at the top of the live oak tree.

Retrieve The Child and spend Quality Time with her.

She takes piano, martial arts and gymnastics, so she keeps me hopping.

Although, at this writing she has just broken her arm (again) and will be off her regular schedule for the next 6 weeks or so. Poor sweet baby.

Mosey on home in the old Honda minivan.

Whip some nice preservative-free frozen dinners into the microwave.

Open a bag of pre-washed greens, and Newman’s Own balsamic.

Pop the top off a Big Heineken – you know the 24 oz size.  Sometimes I can even drink it all.

Watch Meg Ryan movies with the hubs.

And drift towards the sleepy time hour, 10:00 lights out for me.

The Bold Life:

Jannie, that’s what’s so fun about your blog. You make me feel like I’m sitting in the tree with you, eating doughnuts and dreamin’ about life.

Where Do My Song Ideas Come From?
Another great question! Mostly from passing thoughts. Observations.  Needs. Wishes. Hopes. And from that mysterious locale — that je ne said quoi region of the heart I here and now dub “the wonderment of it all.”
I’m pickier now with the songs I bring to fruition.  A lot of those on my “I Need A Man” CD were for me, when I was exploring the recording process, learning to sing harmony – learning ALL really.  And nervous as heck throughout, but something inside me would not quit.

The next 12 songs I’ll record will be for YOU — for the world, if that makes any sense.  Some of them are being written from the pure love of being alive. Others to comfort.  Others to heal. Others to bring a smile. You’ll just have to hear them, as compared to my “I Need A Man” CD to know what I mean:) ?

Well… that’s about it out of this little funster for today, Tess.  Lunch in the live oak tree calls – hey the same tree beside me in this photo!  I planted it in our back deck in 1994.  I planted that fan palm too. Kelly took the picture a couple years ago, when she was 6.

THANKS so much for having me today.  I’ve already said this, but I’ll say it again – I LOVE you and your blog!!

Over and out, Wonderful Tess.

Over and out.

xoxox

The Bold Life:
Jannie thanks for being here with us today. I can’t wait for your new CD! I know all your fans feel the same way.

The laughter and music you brings joy to us all and I’m sooooo grateful for your gift and your willingness to share it with the world.

Over and out Jannie Banannie! Tess xoxo

Whoo-hoo! Can I possibly be first?? Maybe?

I ended up sleeping in to 9:30 (no school for the young ‘un today) and awoke to find me here on your blog. Happy day!

Yep, you can join any band I’m ever in, Tess. Smiling and looking good, as you do — you’ll be The Hit!!

Oh, and I see I made a typo up there — it’s really Jim Croce and not Jin, as I’d written. That’s what happens when I get into the gin with my donuts, I start writing and thinking gin and jin. 🙂

Well, please don’t hold your breath on the second CD, as it will be a lengthy process. But my first goal is to get my best 2 new songs ready for Kerrville NewFolk, the contest, and enter this coming fall. Whooo-hooo!!!

This was fun, Tess! Your commentary sure made me glad to be alive and be your friend!! You are so special. And we who have come to know and love you, love you A LOT!!

Now let me submit this so you can see My Big Eye pop up. 🙂 🙂

    xoxo

And shall I pop back in from time to time to speak to the comments that will come in on this post?

    Toodles!

I loved this interview. I felt like I was dancing along reading each answer.

We need to create more fun in our life. Jannie does just that. I love her music because you don’t know what you’ll get. It keeps you on your toes mentally and physically.

I love that Jannie starts her day with coffee and chocolate cake. We get so caught up in being healthy that we forget to do stuff that is fun too.

Great job Tess! Another interview that delights the mind.

Well just look at Miss Andres Segovia there on some bench at the Alhambra! What etude or sonata are you playing there on the nylon string? Oh, wait, that’s a tree in Texas, and Andres Segovia is male. But I think I got the nylon part right.

We watched some Monty Python a couple of weeks ago!! So funny!! Hey! Speaking of funny….funny I should find you here, Jannie!! Here with Tess!! How awesome is that!!

And you eat in the oak tree! fancy that! I personally like the maple tree (probably because it’s the biggest in our yard). Hey – maybe we could race someday, to the tops of each others trees!! Doesn’t that sound fun! (actually….it sounds like a good way for me to break something…)

Speaking of break….Jannie…do you BREAK-DANCE??? I bet you do!! You should record a video of that and put out on your site. your readers would love it! I would love it!!

Ahhh, mein kaffee ist very good.

But mein donut has fallen, and the weiner dog snatched it up even before it hit the floor. 🙁

But I do have some pie waiting!!

My Dear Karl, ahhhh so super to see you. And hey, I’m thinking we should have an Austin Bloggers meet. You up for it? Did you go see the Big Blogging Guys at SXSW? I’m gonna in 2011!! You might even live on my street and I don’t even know it. Are you here on Funster Lane? 🙂

My Dear Betsy, YOU are always very much part of the reason for MY blogging fun and happiness season. You know that, right? I loves me my Betsy!! 🙂

My Dear Talon, I see you know of Steve Wright! Permanent press setting on the iron — ahhh, so classic. I Googled him yesterday and see he is still very much alive and kicking, doing shows and such. Oh, and I went wild and did FIVE laundry hamper leaps today!! 🙂

My Dear Vered, ahhhh, you are TOO kind! I just love blogging so much and if once in a while one of my posts comes out funny, that’s all the better! 🙂 Yes, I love Tess too — she is truly one of the havens for love and light in my world. I can’t imagine my blogging world without either of you.

My Dear Eight Women Dream — I LOVE your name. Are you one of 8 women dreaming? Or had a dream about 8 women?? That is very very intriguing! Thanks, Catherine, I’m so glad you got a smile, if not the occasional out-loud guffaw at Tess and my nuttiness. 🙂

My Dear Mama Zen, YOU are one of the funniest people I know!!! Consistently funny with frequent heartstrings of beautiful sentiments on life and love. (But I won’t tell ANYONE about your occasional mushy stuff, okay? Okay!!) 🙂

My Dear Wilma!!! We are just so glad you could share and enjoy this. And I can totally see Tess in our band on maybe a whole series of various-sized triangles, hung mobile-style, maybe even with pots n pans, a la Stomp, she can enhance our nutty tunes with. 🙂 Love to you too, Sweet Pea! Hope all is great in your beautiful world today.

My Dear Chris, you DID get the nylon strong exactly right! I think I was probably playing a Sor etude in A minor. That was my previous guitar, a nice acoustic-electric one, but switched to the little steel-string acoustic for that jangley-er sound. I sold that Cordoba to a guy in Germany named Helmut! And of course I’ve written a song in his honor he may never hear. I’ll probably record a video of me singing the ditty some day. Seriously! Well, probably more funnily than seriously — if you know what I mean?? 🙂

My Dear Susan Liddy, who is not a stranger, but a new friend waiting to be embraced for the beautiful human she is. Don’t ya just LOVE Tess Marshall to the maximum max?? I know I sure do, and look forward to meeting her in person. I was a little jealous when I learned a few other bloggers recently got to back in te glory of her in person. 🙁 But I’m over that now! 🙂

My Dear Dorothy, how utterly sweet of you to come to Tess land! You will LOVE it here. Tess is an entity that is hard to put exactly into mere words. And she will love YOU, two birds of a friendly fun feather. I know at this writing I still have a couple of your comments to answer over on my blog, and i will. And may I say you are awesome? Oh, thanks! And I hope you have a great day with your grand-son, but something tells me that you will! 🙂 And I bet he loves his gramma!

My Dear Tony, YOU are one of the funniest funstering funsterites I am having the grand privilege of getting to know. And I look forward in a future post to telling others what a cool blog you got going on over there in Trottersville. Funstamentalist — that is the funniest thing! Your mind is just a garden of quirky thoughts 🙂 and I LOVE that!!

My Dear Lance, which Monty Python did you watch? Dead Parrot? Ministry of Silly Walks? oh, I just LOVE the silly walks one. now Lance… in my new song “Let’s Drink Up The Stars,” the first line is… “Let’s climb way up the chestnut tree…” Yes, I kid thee not!!! And when I read your comment just now I thought maybe of changing it to “Let’s race way up the chestnut tree…” until I read your observation about breaking something. Good point, thinks I. Can i BREAK dance?? CAN I!?!?! You bet, if you call looking like the bacon frying dance a break dance. 🙂 Yes – another video to post! After the ones Kelly took last month of me doing front handsprings in the livingroom!! yep. 🙂 Oh, party last night was fun!! Too wild to describe really.

My Dear Joy, as Doctor Seuss put it so well… “fun is good!” 🙂 Just so so so so glad you could read our antics and enjoy. Tess is a gem of a shining star, and I am sure YOU are too — I’ve got a good good feeling about your Fearless Fun Friday?? How great does THAT sound! See you soon!

My Dear Snaggletooth. greetings and sallytations. Were you aware that “there never seems to be enough time to do the things you wanna do once you find them..?” Ahhh, forget I sang that just now. 🙂 As I know you’d rather be writing songs, poems and working on your visual arts than anything. Anyhoo, I know you already know most of this stuff about me, but thanks so much for your sweet support. Yep — laundry hamper leaps, and as I told Talon — I went wild and did 5 today!! 🙂 Ad to Jin / gin, I actually abhor the taste of gin. yuck! You have the gin, I’ll do the beer. 🙂 Yes, I totally planted those trees! Photos someday of course of the younger ones, and how much they grew into the deck, necessitating a chainsaw may for me!

My Dear Topi, what a alovely landscape gravatar you have there. It’s only small, of course, but I can see it’s a pretty place. Perhpas I shall get to see in bigger on your site? Oh you cried witht laughter at this interview?? BINGO!!! We’ve got a winner here folks!! Whoo-hoo. 🙂 🙂 🙂 And I see you have gotten back on your horse,by the Comment Luv? That will be a good post to check out! I’m constantly falling off my horse. (But luckily , not out of my tree yet.)

My Dear Hilary (Oh goodie!! Hilary’s here!!!) 🙂 How did you KNOW I leave my bra in the tree after lunch?? Do you have that hidden camera set up again?? 🙂 It was my red bra yesterday, the one with the little white polka dots. Hilary!! That is actually one of the two trees I needed a man with a chainsaw to cut away the deck from. Look closely at the bottom and you’ll see the hole. See it? The round hole?? It was heaven to get that cut bigger. And a man with a Sawasll (reciprocating saw,) just let them breathe again last month. BB with his little chisel just wasn’t getting the job done well enough. 🙂

And there you have it. (For Now.) 🙂 Please excuse, as I imagine there are many typos.

    See you all soon!!!

    xoxoxo

    Jannie,
    I made the typo?!? LOL

I think you’ve been the funniest and lightest guest I’ve had. I also think you and Lance were my first blogging friends and I has so few I was always laugin with ya and on both of your blogs.

Oh yeah…me in your band…you’d even get more people laughin but it wouldn’t be at you…not a good think. I do like that Wilma things I could play a triangle.

The nuns in grade school put me in the chorus in a Christmas play cuz they everyone had to be involved. They actually told me not to sing…”just move your lips.” Now don’t think it was damaging cuz even I knew I was that bad;)
I think you being here today is one of the best ideas I’ve come up with yet! Thanks for being you and until we meet again…

    Karl,
You’re right we all need to be lighter and dance more. My siblings and I did so much physical work on the farm my mom would allow us to eat anything and everything because we neeeded the energy.

She was a wonderful cook and baker and we ate cake, cookies and anything else along with the usual breakfast food;)

    I love cake….don’t tell Evita!

    Betsy,
The funsterfest…woot woot! I love that word;) Thanks for adding your fun and delight over here. You rock.

    Talon,
3 splits leapin over a laundry basket…woot woot worth repeating again and laughin some more. I think she is the most loved woman in the blogosphere!

    Vared,
Yes I know why she has 999 comments with every post. Thanks for the compliments!

    Catherine,
Yes I want chocolate with a latte…and you?

    Mama Zen,
    Ditto!

    Wilma,
I even bring my laptop on vacation and then barely use it. I did use it at the cottage to post and did some commenting but nothing compared to the 3 weeks I would have spent at home. Isn’t life grand when you live off line on vacation?

    Chris,
You’re as funny as Jannie! Maybe we can make a trio and do stand up? You in?

    Susan,
Thank you so much for doing that. I love sincere peole and thats like Wilma says screams through my computer.

    Dorothy,
I love the name Noah and I love grandsons! Cheers;)

    Jannie,
I hope you chose the orange chiffon. I was in 7th grade when my oldest sister got married. We grew gladiolas on the farm. So she matched colors of the flowers to the dresses we wore. My flower was called “orange gold” and the dress…”orange chiffon!”

    Tony,
Funstamentalist! OMG Jannie we have some new words for the dictionary. I think this even calls for a contest. You?

    Lance,
You and Jannie break-dancing?!? Gosh the video would go viral. So I’ll move over and make room for you in the tree, we can join us for lunch!

    Joy,
Yes and after meeting you with Megan and Jay and laughing so hard somebodies “abs” hurt. You know how to have fun!

    Snaggle Tooth,
OK you mean Jannie’s typo! And let’s do laundry leaping at home this week;)

    Topi,
I’m so happy you joined us here. Glad you liked Jannie!

    Hillary,
You are as funny as Jannie. Doesn’t she bring out the laughs and grins in all of us. What a gift she has and thanks for joining in. You’re the best.

    Love to you both!

    Hello Jannie and Tess!

Well ladies I have to say, Jannie your interview with Lance was my ultimate interview up until now – now this one with you and Tess is a tie 😀

This was fantastic – the energy of fun just beaming through this! You had me laughing at so many parts. I have to confess that it took me a while too, to realize that “Funster” was not real last name. At first I just thought it was an amazing coincidence that you were so much fun and had that last name. (Ah, all that New Age stuff has made me too open to all possibilities – LOL 🙂

Anyway, it was great to learn more about you Jannie – wishing you all the best with your continued music success and creation!

I’m not sure when I first really hit it off with you. But it was meant to be, for sure!!

Ahhh, those nuns were probably just jealous of your Beatles bubblegum cards?? Or was that before you got your cards??

Hi Tess! Welcome back – can’t wait to hear about your trip. What a fun guest to have – Ms Funster herself! haha

Hi Jannie! Its always fun to see you (read you) just any ole place! What a delight you are! Keep shining and for godsakes keep on singing! Wow, you sure started early! How fortunate you found your heart’s desire without having to go thru what most people do – the whole “what do I want to do?” thing. I’ve worn a LOT of shoes in my decades and I’m still trying them on!
I have loved every minute of it – so diverse it’s comical, but then I’m lovin the joy of looking back on it all! And looking ahead is great fun too!
    Hugs,
    suZen

Oh but look!! More amazing peeps have sauntered in!!

Megan!! Dear Megan, I have missed you so much, but respect and honor you are not posting as much. Besides, you’re always in my heart. Wait? You think my abs are fab? (sucks in gut…) 😉 Ahhh, everyone wants me around eh? Well they better not be counting on me to do their dishes — I suck at that. Soooo much! 🙂 Love YOU so much too!!!

Evita!! Ahhh, Dear Evita, well ya know… I’m gonna put up a sidebar button asking if y’all want to interview me. I’m working on it. So… maybe YOUR interview with me will be your fave yet! 🙂 I LOVE your new age open-nes — LOL but nope, just a band name that evolved. But I feel it’s the PERFECT name for me. Wishing YOU the best too – Sweet Pea!!

Davina!! Davina!! Davina!! ELO — I could go on and on, but I shan’t — as I’m up in ttree again and having 1.5 glasses of bubbly into me… so I best not wax too rhapsodic on songs such as… Evil Woman, Can’t Get It Out Of My Head, Telephone Line, etc… Ahhh, musical memories, light the corners of my beer-soaked mind… 🙂 Yeah funny about the Beatles, I just never had one of their albums. Freaking awesome singles tho. 🙂

Sorry — gotta fly! Dinner’s ready. Actually cooked pork with mint and corn tonight.

    Later!!

Hey Patricia!! How nice you got to eat on the deck in fair weather.
Always great to see your ladybug anywhere. I fell out of the tree today! But only about 20 feet off the ground, so not too bad. Nothing broken — just a bruise or three. JK – JK!

Paige!! You IS my gang!! 🙂 And I love ya!

Hey, sweet Suzen, I admit I got sidetracked from my singing dream for many years, but I consider those my “research years” 🙂 I bet your current shoes are a mighty-fine pair and fit you perfectly!

    xoxo

    THANKS, TESS!!
