What Vision Do You Hold For Your Future?

One of the gifts I brought to the table as a pschologist was my ability to “hold a client’s vision.” At the first session we decided together what the clients goals would be. One of my questions would be, “If you decide to work with me how would you know when you were finished? What would your world look like?

With the answers to these questions we would come up with a future picture of their life. Of course when someone came to see me they were in pain with their spirits broken. They couldn’t hold the picture or “vision” for themselves. So I did.

I think we can hold a vision for anyone if we wish. Think of someone who is having a difficult time? Maybe a friend or relative you know  is looking for a  job. They tell you, “I lost my job a month ago, I have no leads, I’m discouraged and I’m all out of energy. I need a job soon.”

You could reply, “I’m going to hold a vision of you finding a job quickly.”
Then each time you think of your friend you see him with a smile on his face, networking, making contacts and getting that job.” Each time! You don’t fall into his fear or worry. Your job is to hold that vision.

We all hold visions for oursleves everyday. Good or bad we do it. And we get what we hold in our vision.

It’s easy to expect the worst to happen. You just have to join the media and rerun it in your mind and repeat throughout the day.

It takes determination and discipline to hold a creative vision of success for yourself. You have see it with detail and experience the emotions as well. It’s important to set a side time daily to see it exactly as you wish it to be. No fear or doubt allowed in the picture!

What is your vision for yourself?
What is your vision for our world?
Did you create a vision board for 2009? How’s it going so far?

Wow, I visited Jeannie’s website and was impressed by its professionalism. I’m also very inspired by her vision of ‘holding a vision’. I think it’s what many people think they mean when they say “I’ll pray for you” except that Jeannie knows exactly what she is doing, and why and how it works.

In fact, it makes me think that this is something I may do at some point: to learn to hold a person in my thoughts and visualise for the person who may not know how to do it themselves. I guess the universe doesn’t discriminate among ‘visionaries’? As in, whether my jobless friend visualises himself landing a job, or I do the visualising, the universe gets the same vision for this person? This is fascinating, and gives me something to work on right now.

How long does one ‘hold a vision’ for someone else? If I wanted to do visualisations for two other people besides myself, would that be 5 minutes each? Is there a maximum number of people we can realistically visualise for each day?

I’d be grateful if Jeannie could throw some light on this. As I say, I can see myself doing this for other people. And I’m off to visualise my visionboard right now!

Thanks for this post, Tess. You have an excellent network and I’m a fan of your Magic Mondays!

I am entering a new season of my life as my last child leaves for college. I have a vision of what I want my life to be but it is not clear enough. I need to know how to get a clear picture of where I want to go and there are many aspects of that. Mother of adult children, wife, friend, philanthropy and volunteer efforts and a retirement / travel vision are all parts of where I want to be. I would love to have the help to get there. I want to see this as a positive, empowering time in my life. I really appreciate the comment above about praying for people. I often pray for people, but can I do more by holding a vision for them?

  • Tess The Bold Life May 4, 2009, 5:31 am

    Daphne,

I learned to do this when my oldest daughter was struggling as a teenager. She lacked a vision for herself and was struggling with friends and her place in the world. I saw her with a smile on her face, breezing through school with many friends and happy.

I currently do this for my coaching clients as well but I’m featuring Jeanie today and it’s her time to shine! You’re right about her. She has several websites and her portal is http://www.JeanieMarshall.com

    Daphne,
I think you can do this for anyone. I also think doing it for someone, a country or the universe is efficent. I first viewed a Louise Hay video (VHS) 18 years ago. At the very beginning she had a big outline of the world with little red hearts all around it. I think that’s where the idea of others came from.

Ever since that video I see the world in my prayers (and all in it). Now everyone doesn’t pray but that doesn’t matter. I think mentally sending love and light (light = understanding for me) to anyone or when you hold a vision for someone include it in there. And yes this can work for all living creatures as well.

Personally I think prayer, love and light, blessings good thoughts are all of the same thing anyway. For me sending this to others is the most powerful thing one can do.

Again I think Jeanie is a great place for you to learn. I’m excited for you and you will see your life change with any creative visualization. More later…I’m sending love to you today! T.

Visualization is such a gift that I learned about 3 years ago. I have begun to organize clippings for a new vision board for career and personal life. My last personal vision board has about 90% of the things, feelings, occurances achieved in less than 2 years. I look at it every day and really focus in on a few things to hold in my mind each week.

Part of the fun of the board is creating and sharing them with others. The more I share, the more joy spread and the more love comes into my world. As for the visualization besides the boards, here is what I do.

Each morning I say my basic 6 affirmations and one new that I am working on. My current new one is “I am open and willing to take action to follow my Joy in every day life.” I imagine myslef laughing, happy right where I am. I also imagine great success in my biz, Grateful Chics, which means more peace, love and joy are being spread one Gratitude Bead strand at a time.

The key is to imagine myself happy because i have been in service of others. Spreading good will and helping always brings joy into my life. While visualizing, I really allow myself to be present in the “dream”. So much so that my dogs all starting barking this morning and I forgot where I was!

Thanks for this great post. Spread the love and inspiration. Love, Joy

    Hi Daphne,

How wonderful to read your comment.

I’ve been using the phrase “holding a vision” for a long time. By it, I really mean to keep a picture in my mind that is intentional, positive, and uplifting.

In fact, we all use our visioning and imagining processes all the time. While it’s not always intentional or positive or uplifting, the process is, however, always creative! Very creative.

I do this as a professional. For example, I hold a vision for each of my clients three times a day for 30 days following a session. When “holding a vision,” I imagine a specific concept or condition that I know the person desires. It’s an integral part of my work.

As a friend or family member, anyone can do the same. I often teach my clients to do this. So, for example, last week a client was telling me about her sick mother. I immediately saw a picture in my imagination of a wonderful woman, full of life, bubbly, and quick witted. When I described this picture, she said that was her childhood memory of her mother. But her current image was of her mother’s sickness, a picture she needed to replace.

So I told my client to recall this childhood picture (“hold the vision”) before each visit, before each phone call to the hospital, when going to sleep at night, and generally each time she thought about her mother.

Over the weekend, I received an email message from my client saying that her mother is much improved and that she keeps seeing her mother’s curly brown hair and laughter superimposed over the frail body. She also noticed that she has stopped worrying about her mother — worry is a powerful, but negative vision we often hold for others.

How we anticipate something to be is powerful beyond words. Many people discount the power of visualization, but our images and thoughts create our life.

Daphne, the amount of time you might spend on this is not nearly as important as the consciousness with which you approach it. One second of a powerful, intentional vision can make a difference. As I told my client, the key is to hold a positive vision whenever she thinks of her mother.

You suggested that “holding a vision” might be the same as a prayer I say, that depends on the prayer! If you pray for a sick person, you are imagining the illness; if you see the person as healthy or vibrant, you send a prayer into the Universe that is the prayer you want answered.

I hope this clarifies your questions.

    Make it a Joyful Day!
    Jeanie

    Hi Sandy,

Wow, congratulations on raising a family. The “empty nest” is a term that is often applied to this time of life. With the phrase, you might feel good or not so good.

In your comment you said, “I want to see this as a positive, empowering time in my life.” This is a WONDERFUL starting place. So start here. Eventually you can drop the “I want to” and begin to see this as a positive, empowering time in your life. When you honor where you are, you can more easily move to where you want to be, even if you’re not sure exactly where you want to be.

Just let the vision come to you. I’d also suggest that you let go of the need to have it be clear and precise right now. Let your feelings guide you. As you consider one possibility, ask yourself how you feel. If you feel good, keep exploring; if you feel not good, stop or pause or change direction.

If you’re on one side of a room and spot something on the other side of the room, but don’t know exactly what it is, you take a step forward. With one step, your vision of the room changes. As you keep stepping forward, the object that was once in the distance keeps getting closer, clearer.

I suggest that you approach your life in much the same way … one step at a time. Enjoy the journey.

Oh, and there’s a video at my web site that might inspire you to ask yourself questions that are empowering.

    Make it a Wonderful Day!
    Jeanie

    Jeanie,

I love the way you describe worry: worry is a powerful, but negative vision we often hold for others. I was queen of worry until I shut out all and I mean all TV news, newspaper, online news CNN etc. My neighbor was talking about the swine flu and I didn’t know what she was talking about. How crazy is that?

Well I’ve felt much better, not worried and I’m holding my own vision for our world.

Also: If you pray for a sick person, you are imagining the illness; if you see the person as healthy or vibrant, you send a prayer into the Universe that is the prayer you want answered.
Well my daughter has just fell madly in love with her new boyfriend. I found myself “worried” about his job etc. Ha then I read your words as a gentle reminder to switch my focus. It’s so great to have a fresh reminder and gently get back on the path. I’m seeing them happy, healthy and whole, now!

Then: Eventually you can drop the “I want to” and begin to see this as a positive, empowering time in your life. When you honor where you are, you can more easily move to where you want to be, even if you’re not sure exactly where you want to be.

I’m making an affirmation card for my husband. He is currently looking for new work in a new direction and not sure what that will be.

This has been great help to me! I appreciate you joining in the conversation.
    Grateful,
    Tess Marshall

    Tess,

I have to say Bravo to you for not knowing about the swine flu. The media (not germs) are spreading it.

I’m with you on TV news. Have not watched in 30 years. It means that I’m ignorant about certain things, but I do seem to know what I need to know without that point of view. I choose happiness instead.

Yes, we all need reminders. That’s one of the reasons I write so much. I remind myself as well as others.

    Make this a Magical Day!

    Tess,
My current vision for myself is to be able to work fulltime in the area of inspiration and healing, loving more people and being surrounded by beautiful truthful and trustworthy friends and family 🙂 For my vision of the world, I imagine a more peaceful place where people continue to build bridges and sharing their resources to those who are more in need of it.

    Jeanie,
More power to your site! I’ve visited it and read some of your quick tips. I particularly liked the one about having our own inner smile 🙂

OMG!!! Tess – I ADORE this phrase – “holding a client’s vision”. What a WONDERFUL way to phrase such an important concept!

Thank you – thank you – thank you!!! This phrase is totally helping me to reframe what it is I do with my clients. I had seen myself as a “nag” or a “bearer of bad news” and instead I am “holding their business vision as they navigate the turbulent and ever changing seas of the internet”.

What a HUGE difference there is between the two.

    Thank you!

    Jocelyn,

Wow, you have very strong vision statements. It is so easy to join with you to hold these visions, which I will do over the next 30 days.

I’m so glad you like my sites. The Inner smile Quick tip was inspired by a colleague who ask for some comfort in a troublesome situation. She found it transformative.

I love lots of comments but what even means more to me is when I touch someone deeply. I think I just have. And I’m blessed to be able to. You rock!

Hi Tess .. thanks for opening the door to Jeanie and her creative visualisation .. I can ‘see’ what you are both saying .. I’ve experienced it recently with the incredible healer who has helped my mother so much .. and become a daughter to her and a sister to me .. and she visualises and definitely sees things in completely different ways .. I’m so looking forward to connecting more with her .. but one thing at a time: my mother.

I am starting to visualise more .. I probably did .. but now I have that goal, that passion, that future and I can see the jigsaw pieces and they will all come together in due time.

Thanks for seeing what we need ..

Isn’t that a good analogy jigsaw pieces coming together. Sometimes we forget there are different ways to look at things or we get what we see!

What a wonderful surprise – two Magic Mondays in one week! My first thought was, wait a minute, surely it’s not the same Jean Marshall who ran the first life coach training course I ever attended?! (I’m heading over after posting this to check out Jeanie’s site.)

Then I saw the wonderful comments thread. You know what I’m like, Tess; I love a comments box full of long, refreshing comments and you and Jeanie have definitely generated some here. (By the way, while I remember, Victoria M’s away at the moment but I’ll be in touch about the book when I hear from her.)

Jeanie, I love the phrase “to hold a vision.” I’ve used it myself for a while but I’m glad you’ve built such a wonderful product around the concept. It’s vital, essential to the whole core of coaching. The picture on your product’s perfect. As coaches, we hold visions without crushing, shaping, getting involved or merging. We bless someone else’s vision with our attention, the channelling of our instincts and our protection, but we hold it in such a way that it’s free to take flight at any time because we’re not attached.

Someone is going to be so thrilled to win this. I don’t know how you manage this every week, Tess, but it’s a wonderful gift to your readers – an introduction to new inspirers and a freebie.

My vision for the blogging world is to see communities like this thriving; the world needs healing, community and inspiration and this is the way to go.

My own vision – don’t laugh – is to clear the attic and get an invigorating feeling of being clean and clear back, like I used to have when I was focusing on my homelife coaching, writing more and blogging less.

I saw one of my posts as a trackback above; I don’t really understand what trackbacks are – but I appreciate it, Tess. I also saw a janice mentioned as last week’s winner but I can’t go and check if it’s me until I post this; I’ve done that so often – got distracted, clicked a link and lost a comment!)

This post came at a good time; it’s been a week of big highs and loss-filled lows. Thanks, Tess.
