Fear is a thief. It will steal your time, energy and dreams. It makes you anxious during the day and keeps you tossing and turning throughout the night.

Fear is crazy-making; it taunts and depletes you. It keeps you imprisoned, depressed and lifeless. Fear steals your joy.

It doesn’t have to be this way. You have the freedom of choice. Make a decision today; choose to take your power back.

Don’t let fear win. Choose to take action. Choose adventure over your comfort zone. Choose to give your attention, time and energy to your dreams. Choose to be unstoppable!

If you’re looking for ways to make different choices but don’t know where to start, you may find these ideas helpful.

Visualize life without fear. How magnificent would your life be? Write out a description of your best life. Make a mental movie and give yourself the leading role. Rerun your movie as often as necessary.

Have faith. Do you have faith in your fear or faith in your ability, talent and wisdom? We never lose faith; we only misplace it. Believe in possibilities and opportunities. Believe in yourself. Believe in your higher power, the universe or God. Believe that you have a part in making the world a better place.

Delete mental garbage. Give up your negative affirmations. “I can’t do it.” “I’m not as good as the others.” “I don’t have time.” “I’m not smart enough or qualified.” Replace the garbage with positive self-talk and affirmations.

Identify and use your resources. This can include your mastermind group, spiritual practices, strengths, skills, books, classes and anything else that will give you the courage to be your brilliant self.

Take action. Do your most important tasks at the beginning of your day. Don’t get caught up in busy work. Stay committed. If you veer off course, begin again. If you make a mistake, begin again. Keep going and you will reach your goal.

Persist and persevere. Don’t become discouraged by a previous failure. Instead use it as a learning opportunity.  Answer the following questions: How does this make me stronger? What opportunity does it give me? What is the next move I must take? Press on!

Trust the process. Learn to trust life. Trust that things have a way of working themselves out. Trust that the right people will be put on your path. Trust that you’ll pick yourself up if you fail. When you trust the process, you’re able to live in the present moment without worrying about the past or the future.

We were born to take risks, explore, grow and expand. We are meant to be out there living our dreams and making the world a more loving place. It’s time to let go and give life everything you’ve got. That’s my plan. I invite you to join me.

11 Tips to Stop Your Approval Addiction

PicMonkey approval

I don’t need your approval to be OK and you don’t need mine. I don’t need your love and devotion to be happy and you don’t need mine.

It took me two different therapists and several years to finally take back my power and accept that certain family members, friends, coworkers and colleagues would never accept or approve of me. Never.

When I finally tired of holding myself back, I let go of trying to win others over. I let go of trying to fit in. I let go of trying to be someone I was not. I let go of needing what I so desperately wanted—their validation.

I’ve since picked up the shattered pieces of my heart and soul and accepted that some people will never love and accept me. Never.

I’m perfectly fine with it. There are over seven billion people in the world. There are plenty of people who love me and always will. There are people I haven’t met yet who will be crazy about me!

If you’re tired of beating your head against the wall, if you’re tired of trying to be someone you’re not, then it’s time to let go of seeking validation from others.

It’s time to be exactly who you choose to be. That’s freedom!

The most splendid achievement of all is the constant striving to surpass yourself and to be worthy of your own approval. ~ Denis Waitley

1. Be your own best friend. You cause your own pain and suffering when you fail to love and approve of yourself. Give yourself the love and acceptance that you want from others and your neediness will subside.

2. An opinion is only a story. What someone thinks or says about you is only their perception. Don’t allow anyone to define who you are or what you’re all about. Don’t allow others to decide your worthiness. You have a Divine legacy.

3. Think well of yourself. Remind yourself that the unasked-for opinions of others don’t matter. Don’t allow anyone to bring you down. Treat yourself with respect. Celebrate who you are. You deserve the best that life has to offer.

4. Observe yourself. Gently notice how you are around others and what you say and do to disconnect from your authentic self. How do you give away pieces of yourself to fit in? Learn to make the choices that are right for you.

5. Make a decision to stop. Stop pretending to be someone you’re not. Stop hiding who you really are. Stop feeling pressured to go along with something you don’t believe in.

6. Practice being you. Lean into who you are. Don't be afraid to speak your truth. Honor what you want. Don’t go along with the crowd. Be willing to walk away. Make decisions based on what’s best for you.

7. Find your tribe. Don’t take rejection and abandonment personally. Walk away from the people who don’t want the best for you. Have zero tolerance for those who don’t see your magnificence. Seek out like-minded family and friends.

8. Know what you want. Hold on tight to your own tastes, values, ideas and dreams. Take risks, commit and allow yourself to fail. Live life your way!

9. Serve others. Don’t be a people pleaser. Find the people who need your talents and gifts and look for a way to meet their needs.

10. Be kind to yourself. Accept your shadow side, imperfections and flaws. Understand and heal the parts of you that you’d rather hide. Don’t allow yourself to be shamed. You deserve to be seen and heard.

11. Live a life of awesomeness. Let your beauty shine. You don’t need anyone’s permission. You set the tone for your life. Be weird. Go in the opposite direction of the herd. Stand in your power, have fun and enjoy your freedom!

How has the need for approval impacted your life?

My Favorite Bits of Wisdom…

On Living Your Dreams

It begins with an act of courage. Most people lead unsatisfactory lives because they don't dare to dream of an expansive, fulfilled, creative life. Most of us are filled with fears, and our fears and anxieties overwhelm our vulnerable little dreams.

This moment is all we have, and we can, in this moment, create some seriously effective magic, if we wish – if we dare to dream.

On the Power of Words

An affirmation, a mantra, a prayer, programs your limitless subconscious mind. It can affect every are of your life, including every relationship you have. "Every day, in every way, the light and life within me are working miracles in my life and in the world."

On Intimate and Family Relationships

Imagine wonderful partnerships with those we love, where we support each other completely and love each other deeply, every moment of our lives.

Take a good, honest look at your intimate and family relationships. Are they successful? Pleasurable? Generally happy and fulfilling? Is there respect for everyone? That's the basic key to successful relationships: respect.

What is the purpose of a family? To protect and support each one of us, to be in partnership together, to encourage each other to be happy and healthy, and to help us all fulfill our highest dreams.

On Your Dreams

Our thought has to become focused on a single, powerful idea. Keep coming back to your focused thought. Your focus creates your reality.

The greater our dreams, the more doubts and fear arise.  In order to create something, our emotions have to become focused as well as our thought.

And the greatest emotion – the emotion that is the most powerful in its ability to focus our thoughts and dreams – is the emotion of love.

Focus on your dreams with love, and your dreams will soon become manifest. Before long, you will be living in a world that was only an insubstantial dream a few  years before.

A World That Works for All

Let's dream of a world where everyone is respected and granted the basic human rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let's dream of a world where everyone is housed and fed and educated; let's dream of a world where we are encouraged to dream to live the life of our dreams.

We all have a Great Work ahead of us: the work of healing ourselves and our planet, creating a global self-sustaining system that supports life for all, for generations after generations, and helps everyone move up the pyramid of human consciousness into the realms of higher education and self-actualization.

I'm all for that Marc! Count me in!

Create living pictures of the end result in your mind. It will keep you from being distracted by outside events or circumstances.

In a world that moves at a rapid pace, it’s easy to feel fearful. It's easy to feel like you’re being left behind while others are succeeding at making their dreams come true.

Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal. ~ Pamela Vaull Starr

It can be tempting to give up or give in and live a life without meaning, purpose or happiness. Don’t!

I grew up number six in a family of 10. I struggled to keep up with my brothers and sisters and I struggled to get my parents' attention. I found a way to survive and even thrive.

I married and started my family when I was very young. I struggled to make time for myself. I struggled to make my dreams come true. I never gave up.

It took me nine and a half years to get my bachelor's degree while raising my four daughters. I earned my master's degree in less than three years.

When I was young I decided that I would permanently move to a warmer climate someday. Twenty years later I finally did it. I never have to drive on ice or shovel snow again! I will grow old in a warm climate.

What if you really knew in your heart, mind and soul that you could succeed? What would you do? When would you begin?

It doesn’t matter how long it takes. It only matters that you begin. That you never give up.

If I can do it, so can you! Be bold, be committed and be determined to get where you want to go. Begin today!

Read on and discover how to get where you want to go, starting today!

1. Ask for help.

It's not the load that breaks you down; it's the way you carry it. ~ Lena Horne

2. Empower yourself.

Gather the knowledge you need. Do the research. Ask others for the necessary information. Read books. Attend a class, a seminar or a webinar. Knowledge greatly increases your chances of success.

3. Get a mentor.

I did not give in because he would not let me give in. ~ Thomas Wolfe

Graduate school was difficult for me. I found a mentor and I met with him every Sunday evening. I couldn't have made it through a statistics class without him. He mentored me again when I wanted to establish my private practice.

4. Join a mastermind group.

It takes a community to maintain a human. ~ Earon Davis

Allow others to inspire and teach you. Support others as well. When you’re part of a strong group you increase your confidence and learn quicker. Your chances of success skyrocket.

It's better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward. ~ Chinese proverb

The answers have always been inside of you. ~ Jodi Chapman

Each morning write down one small success. Write down the things that went right in the last 24 hours. This one step will help motivate you every day.

9. Be happy now.

There are some days when I think I'm going to die from an overdose of satisfaction. ~ Salvador Dali

Don’t wait until you succeed to be happy. Happiness comes from within. It’s not dependent on anything external. Success doesn’t bring happiness. There are a lot of miserable but wealthy, successful people.

Oftentimes when you are struggling, making changes or working on a big project, these are the first three things to go. Know this need not be!

Bright Star Shine From Water

To me spirituality is learning to become a more loving person. My spiritual journey is a process that never ends. It gives my life meaning and purpose beyond the titles of wife, mother, psychologist, writer, speaker, and blogger.

Living from my heart and letting go of fear has taken me from a “me” based life to a “we” based life. I discovered our inner connectedness.

I was in my mid-thirties and miserable when I forged a new path. My four teenagers were driving me crazy. I was out of control. I wanted to abandon everyone. Instead, I made the decision to continue therapy and began attending a support group.

Soon after, I began eating healthy and exercising. It was a natural progression. I replaced my blame and anger with self-love and forgiveness.

I have gained enormous strength, energy, and faith from knowing the answers to any questions or problems in my life come from within.

Leading a life filled with love, meaning, and purpose, involves self acceptance, connecting with others, and appreciating the fullness of each moment.

Knowing and acting from this place has allowed me to manage my power in a way that encourages spiritual growth.

The most important thing I’ve learned is that we’re all here to help each other.

It’s time we begin believing in each other again. My desire is for every person who comes in contact with me to benefit from my energy and light…my presence.

No matter where I am, or what I do, I can influence everyone I come into contact with in a good way. And so can you!

Consider the following insights and bits of wisdom gifts, from me to you, for your journey.

The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. -Marcel Proust

Stop trying to be perfect.

There is nothing wrong with you. Accept who you are in this moment. You are enough. You have enough. You do enough. Nobody else has your purpose, gifts, or talents. Drop your crazy-making expectations of a perfect life. Instead bask in the glory of your imperfection.

Meditate. Live purely. Be quiet. Do your work with mastery. Like the moon, come out from behind the clouds! Shine.

Remain calm.

Stop all longing, craving, and struggling. Drop your agenda. Accept “what is.” Do acts of kindness for the pleasure it brings. Filling your days with trying to get some place or get some thing will steal your joy. Frantic behavior destroys peace of mind. Replace your striving with thriving.

Remember thisvery little is needed to make a happy life. -Marcus Aurelius

Delight in the magical moments.

Notice what arouses appreciation in you. It could be the blue sky, the squeaky clean smell of a baby, or the touch of a breeze on your bare skin. Savor these experiences like you would an expensive piece of chocolate. Your whole being craves wonder and joy! The only thing we have to do is become aware of it

Service is the very purpose of life. It is the rent we pay for living on the planet.
 -Marian Wright Edelman

Be of service.

We all have the power as individuals to make a difference in the life of every single person we meet. Everything we do counts. There is no such thing as a small act of service or kindness.

When we are fearful, we tend to stop giving to others. We stop doing the very thing that will rid us of our fear. Exercising compassion, generosity, and empathy and doing good deeds makes our body, mind, and spirit thrive.

You experience grace and synchronicity. As you learn to give instead of grasp, unexpected miracles happen. You move forward freely and effortlessly.

The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines. -Charles Kuralt

Keep your mind and heart open.

Believe in the goodness of the world. Diversity is Divine. Learn to celebrate differences rather than judge them. The loving kindness you offer to others acts as a healing balm that can’t be lost or diminished.

Don’t allow the negativity and fear in the world dictate how you live your life. Even in the darkness we can find a glimmer of light in everyone and everything.

Strong lives are motivated by dynamic purposes. -Kenneth Hildebrand

Focus on the answer.

In the midst of difficult circumstances, we tend to focus on the problem instead of the solution. Worry and anxiety create the exact thing we do not want. Learn to change your focus. Shift your perception. If you don’t believe in obstacles they fail to exist. Learn to create room for a resolution as you relax, breathe, listen, and let go. Release fear thoughts and expect the best in life.

Music has charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks or bend a knotted oak. –Carl Lewis

Learn to soothe yourself in times of trouble.

When we feel overwhelmed by life it’s easy to use self-destructive behaviors like overeating, arguing, or drinking too much. One of the best methods I use to calm myself down is going for a long run. Invest time in discovering what makes you feel good. Try listening to music, hike a new trail, or write in your journal.

I do not think of all the misery, but of the glory that remains. Go outside into the fields, nature, and the sun, go out and seek happiness in …Anne Frank

Don’t believe everything you think.

We terrorize ourselves by listening to, reading, and watching the news. Fear dissipates when we bring dark thoughts into the light.  Question what’s happening in the world. Focus on the people doing good and honorable things. Each time you catch yourself frightened by external events, go within and replace your fear thoughts with the memory of a happy place or time. Byron Katie asks, “Who would you be without your thoughts?”

Screw up (often, and boldly), learn from your mistakes, repeat.  -Elizabeth Gilbert

Assume the Best

Believe that all is in Divine Order. When you tire of swimming against the current of life you learn to go with the flow. Dwell on what can go right instead of what’s sure to go wrong. Remember infinite possibilities and opportunities exist. Remain open to risk and failure.

And we are put on Earth a little space, that we may learn to bear the beams of love. -Plato

Love everyone.

Let others off the hook. Focus on their loving qualities. Verbally acknowledge their amazing personalities, contributions, and success.

Stephen and Andrea Levine work with death and dying. According to them there are three things we all have in common. We all want to love, be loved, and know that we matter. Tell others they matter.

Imagine everyone with an invisible sign around their neck that says, “Make me feel special.” Doing this never fails to increase your joy, peace, and happiness.

Right now you are one choice away from a new beginningone that leads you toward becoming the fullest human being you can be. –Oprah Winfrey
