How to Understand Your Fear and Move Beyond It

There have been moments in my life when I have been stretched, when I have placed my voice last or it didn’t even exist. From a very young age, I was fearful of what my parents thought about me and I felt that they didn’t understand me or want to connect with who I was. As a result, I kept myself to myself.

In my teenage years, I was extremely depressed about where I was and where I desired to be in the world. I didn’t fit into the society model that my parents wanted me to be part of. I felt alienated and closed off from society and my family.

There were many moments of fear, anger and misunderstanding; whenever I expressed a view, I was shot down. At the time, I didn’t understand what was happening and why being honest created this result.

I backed down and stop sharing who I was entirely because of the outcome. The only person I could trust was myself and I began to follow my own intuition and my heart. I was conditioned to keep my truth and opinions to myself and I began to have a fear of being seen

Eventually, I started speaking up in school, doing what I felt like doing and not caring about the circumstances. I started taking a stand for myself at home, speaking my truth and standing in my power.

Facing my fear and being seen was the only way that I could break from the cycle and it is where I got the most amount of freedom.

If the environment does not support you, speak your truth. It is important to stand your ground and share how you feel. I didn’t want to be told what to do anymore. I had a voice and wanted to be heard.

How many of us spend our lives in this exact same cycle and never step away from it because we are too scared to speak up?

Your voice matters and deserves to be heard. Sometimes the fear of speaking up is so great that we limit ourselves and stop ourselves from being who we are.

I want you to know that you too can stand your ground without letting fear lead your life. It is liberating when you face up to that fear and realize that the power lies in you to make that change.

Here are some tips to face up to fear and work your way through it:

1. Be honest

How do you feel, what is going on? What is this fear about? What’s the experience that you are fearful about? Where is the resistance coming from? Let your feelings and emotions out onto paper, share all that is going on and how it makes you feel.

2. Accept yourself

Forgive yourself for how you feel and where you are. It’s okay. Be in a space of forgiveness and acceptance.

3. Let go

Write a letter to yourself about how you feel or about a person who has instilled fear in you. The letter is for you to be with your feelings and know that you are being heard. By writing about it, you are letting go of that experience and making peace with yourself.

4. Take action

Choose an activity that motivates you and do it, whether it’s singing, dancing or going for a walk. Choose something that gets you out of your comfort zone and you’ll be rewarded for it.

When you take action, the energy of the moments and feelings that you once had shift and you start to open up to what is possible. A new sense of direction awakens.
