13 Short Tips to Get Your Glow On

Sparkler

At times we worry more about looking good than feeling good. People who feel good radiate a loving energy. They almost seem to glow. Good things happen for them. They seem to live effortlessly in the now.

Others are attracted to them for reasons they don't understand.

The following exercises will help raise your energy, you too can glow.

1. Speak kindly. Go out of your way to have kind conversations; with a bank teller, a restaurant server, a friend or loved one. Learn to be pleasant through out the day requardless of what's happening around you.

2. Get going. Do something today you’ve been putting off, make a phone call or a doctor’s appointment. Clean your office, go paperless or begin to recycle. Refuse to procrastinate.

3. Take a break from electronics.  Get out of your home or office and away from your computer, iPod, television etc. Spend time in nature or sit in silence in your back yard for a few hours regularly.

4. Move on. Let go of a toxic memory, relationship or job. Refuse to feel sorry for yourself. Like Byron Katie suggests, drop the story you are telling yourself about a person or situation.

5. Get a fresh start. Learn something new. Take a class or a workshop. Attend a conference or a take a retreat. Make your life more interesting. Choose to grow.

6. Set limits. Learn to say no. You don’t need an excuse. Use the line, “No, that’s not going to work for me.” Then pause. Repeat it again if necessary.

7. Spread more joy. Lao Tzu advises one to be empty and full. Empty yourself of anger, resentment and fear. Fill your heart with calm, sunshine and joy.

8. Act in the spirit of love. Think loving thoughts, speak loving words, infuse every thing you do with love. Love is powerful energy. Love heals.

9. Do what makes you happy. My daughter competes in triathlons, another enjoys motherhood. What do you love to do? Participate in what makes you happy as often as possible.

10. Find what is true, good and beautiful. What do you want, like and need in this moment? Live the life you want and live it wholeheartedly.

11. Listen to your intuition. When you are perplexed, sit still, journal and ask for guidance. As you connect to your inner self you will find access to the wisdom of the Universe. Never second guess yourself.

12. Live a rich life. Include ceremonies, celebrations and rituals in your daily life. This allows you to turn ordinary events into mindful acts of wonder and awe.

13. Have fun. Spend time everyday laughing and making someone else laugh. Your life is the sum of your choices. Look for ways to create light-hearted experiences for yourself and others.

Today, I am going to pick up a friend from the airport, and she is going to spend the week with my wife and I. We are going to get our glow on by showing her around Atlanta, and trying to find a new place to eat. I guarantee it will be a week of laughs all around!

This post just got Dugg (digged?) and tweeted!

You know me I’m all about feeling good. Today I’m doing some work that feeds my passions then I get to see some girlfriends I haven’t seen in a while. Plus it’s raining here, which after a string of hot summer days always feels good (temporarily).

Great list. Have a great week with lots of glow!

Great thoughts Tess. All I know is that it’s a wonderful life. To get our glow on, we should smile a lot, turn to friends, make people happy in some way or another. And we should also be ourselves. It’s just about making the game of life easier for others.

    Wonderful ideas Tess!

The one I have been practicing the most lately is #7 – Spread More Joy. When I am in a place of contentment and happiness, the world likes brighter and my problems not as large. When I react with joy instead of frustration, obstacles seem to disappear faster.

Thanks for sharing these amazing ideas.

We all need to take break from electronics. I say this right after I just bought a new lap top too. 🙂

I think it comes down to making time to reflect on life. When we stop wanting to get to that next thing and enjoy life, that’s when we open up to heaven on earth.

  • Jan August 23, 2010, 9:03 am

Love this, Tess. Get your GLOW on! I wrote about that today at my blog in terms of vibration and raising it – choosing consciously, as you outline here so well, to light our own fire. I often do so by thinking about dear loved ones and friends. Or reading over a card someone sent me. Or plugging in to nature. Whatever works, yes? May you love and be happy today.

I’m having a low-energy day, plus it’s super humid today, so I’m being okay with that. I’ve shifted a few projects over to tomorrow and am doing just a handful of things I truly enjoy, like visiting and commenting on favorite blogs!

    Joshua,
My daughter lives in Atlanta so I know the fun you’ll have. It’s these small things that make life meaningful…it’s all about glow!

    Stacey,
You have all bases covered. However the success that you are it doesn’t surprise me!

    Jakey,
You got that right and in the process of making others happy we are left with the same.

    Alex,
I’m learning to react with joy even in tense situations. It makes the obstacles and problems lose their power and then even those become glowing opportunities.

    Karl,
A new laptop. I want one;) Goody goody for you my friend. I love your idea of heaven on earth.

    Jan,
Yes what ever works and it can be something different everyday. I’ll be over to read your post. You offer such wisdom.

    Jean,
Thanks so much for that huge compliment. Funny you should mention laying low. I’ve spent the weekend in my home doing nothing all weekend. Today I’ve go my glow on!

    Hi Tess,
Indeed it is true. People who feel good about life and about themselves just radiate that energy. Its raining and stormy in Boston today… so I am taking great joy in hunkering down and immersing myself in the writing of my book.

  • Eduard @ People Skills Decoded August 23, 2010, 11:24 am

Hi Tess! It’s always a pleasure to read an article with a positive touch 🙂

Here’s how I see things: bottom line, life is not about what we have, what we do or who we are, but about how happy those thinks make us. At the end of the day, if we are not positive about those things, it is pretty much in vain.

Happiness, optimism, enjoying ourselves can be cultivated from the outside and even more from the inside. I believe real mastery is in combining these two ways and creating careers, relationships, lives for ourselves which we feel positive about.

    Best,

    Eduard

Hi Tess, I’ve got my glow on, this being a true late summer day with the sun shining in San Fran! I take the weekends off from my laptop which does a world of good for my adventuring side who craves to get out there instead of cooped up indoors.

As for doing what I love, it seems to be the best way to be effective, to be happy and to be love-in-action as Wilma so eloquently says.

I also love breaking out of a routine, no matter how small. It gets me paying attention which tends to help my overall disposition.

    xo

Tess – I love the first line – putting time into how we look instead of how we feel! It’s so true. These are all excellent – focusing on the good in particular seems to bring on the glow. I have a bee sting so I’m not feeling so glowy! But that’s OK, it’s impermanent! I appreciate you.

  • Mark August 23, 2010, 5:14 pm

If we all would follow these excellent tips we would live a joyful life! One of the ways I glow today is to share stories when someone comes to your door seeking and let them find the answer within the story you tell.

  • Tess August 23, 2010, 6:39 pm

OMG all my wonderful readers and commenters! I just lost all of my individual comments…so I can say to each of you that you bring me more joy than you know by taking the time to read my blog. I love you. I appreciate you. I celebrate you. xo

Isn’t that the truth about people who glow and so attractive to others. I will try to follow some of these things…esp. #3. I really need to take more technology breaks. I also love act kindly. We are always working on this at our preschool.

    Thanks for a great post.

  • Davina August 23, 2010, 11:16 pm

    Hi Tess.
It’s so true that these people tend to attract more of what they are sending out. And even if something goes awry, they are better able to respond as opposed to react. My fav item on your list was the first one: “Go out of your way to have kind conversations”. I’ve practiced this and it seems that just by being conscious of it, there is more of an openness that people respond to. It’s subtle, but it makes a difference.

    Hey Tess
It was wonderful… I used to ask myself what is that thing always burning inside my heart? and the answer always is LOVE. Although unfortunately in my country because of cultural and religious matters womens like me are not acceptable ones I can not be something else. so I will GO ON and find friends like you in any corner of the world who understand the meaning of glowing.
    Thanks

    Hi Tess,

I like the line “At times we worry more about looking good than feeling good”

It is so true that for people trying to fit they forget to be, and then the whole life thing goes spiraling down.

The points you mention become the antidote to the wrong direction 🙂

  • Patricia August 24, 2010, 6:08 pm

wow what a great post and I enjoy reading all your comments – it just radiates joy and energy.
One of the nicest things one of my daughter said to me after she had spent a summer waitressing was, ” Not very many of my customers are like you mom, you make the wait person feel like a whole human being – you actually see people and that feels so great.”

I am going to remember to do these things, because I have spent too much of my life in intense thinking and that seems to push others away…
    Thank you for sharing

Love the list and for me right now 7-13 resonate and are so important in my life right now- learning to do what I really love, letting go of the should, what will, what ifs……….. you know the story. and yes no 5 i will start something new the feeds my soul. yesterday a friend asked if I would like to be part of an artist’s journal project over the next 6 months. I love the idea of taking time to get back into my creative mode….even spending 5 mins a day is empowering- no lt taking on any more watch for a post at Abundance Highway inspired by you comments- change is taking place.

Hi Tess .. wonderful list and glad it goes to 13 – my lucky number .. today will be a good day – I get the keys to my flat .. and can then get on with the rest of my life – on top of that .. it’s quiet, within walking distance of my mother – so I can start getting my exercise .. and as I’ve decluttered a great deal .. I can start off with a new lease of life – having had a really difficult year .. so following each and every one of your points is there for the taking now .. and I’ll be doing just that –

  • Megan "JoyGirl!" Bord August 25, 2010, 4:48 am

Tess, I loved this list starting at the title, and it just got better from there. YES! I’ve found that the most beautiful people in my eyes are the ones who shine from the inside out, because I think inner affects outer. I’ve become more beautiful as I’ve evolved in the last ten years, and have heard people say that I have a glow about me. What a HUGE compliment that is! Lately, doing the things I’m passionate about has helped to really light me up. I get such a boost from it, but also (and I love that you listed this), doing stuff I’ve previously put off. When I accomplish things on my to-do list, I feel competent and powerful. YES YES YES! An even brighter glow.

And may I just say that YOU, my wonderful friend, glow from head to toe.

    Lots of love!
    Megan

Beautiful reminders of light, and sharing the love between one another. It helps to be radiant, and to shine that out onto the universe. It is our light that radiates more and more of what we are, and it is key to be within. 🙂 Your blog is inspirational and you are being what you are within the moment, raising awareness in uplifting others to be what they truly are so that we all become more in tune with the universe. Love and Light to you Sister. 🙂

  • Evita August 26, 2010, 7:45 am

    Hi Tess

    Very nice list!

Speaking kindly is huge! People for example use all sorts of negatively charged or profane words when they speak. And after being little and getting over the fact that saying “bad” words is not a sin, in my more mature years, I realized the reason we don’t want to use them is because of the energy or charge they carry.

How someone speaks envelops them in a certain energy, one which will make us glow in light, or be shadowed in various dark, negative states.

Cracking post Tess. And what a start: speak kindly. So simple, so doable but an impossible skill for many. Why have we lost all the simple skills of life like manners, neighbourliness, romance and helping for no reason? This post proves there are still people (you!) who are letting that inner human goodness shine. So come on everyone else join in. Ready, steady…GLOW!
